If our beloved Selena were still with us, she would be turning 47 on Monday. For the Reina de Tejano’s many dedicated fans, this weekend is a time to celebrate the life, music and beauty of the icon, whether with a “Selena” movie night or a techno cumbia dance party.
Here, several events commemorating our gal Sel’s cumpleaños taking place around the country.
On Sunday, a Selena Drag Brunch is coming to Austin, Texas — and you really have to be there. The noon-to-3 p.m. event will take place at Micheladas Cafe y Cantina.
Caguas, Puerto Rico
La Isla del Encanto is filled with Selena fans, too. Puerto Ricans can go to the Ojalá Speakeasy Bar in Caguas on Saturday for a Selena tribute. Local act Kary Hernández will perform the icon’s songs starting at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $6.41.
Chicago’s monthly Latino party “Fuego!” will be dedicating its Sunday event to the Queen of Tejano. Spinning Sel tunes from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., the party, located at the Scarlet Bar, will be lit.
Corpus Christi, Texas
In Corpus Christi, Selena’s hometown, the city will be celebrating the annual Fiesta de la Flor for its fourth year. This year’s event will see performances by Becky G, Los Palominos, The Mavericks and more as well as a silent disco, Selena wax figure, a Selena look makeup tutorial by Desi Perkins, fireworks and more. The two-day event starts Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at noon. Tickets start at $15.
Over in Denver, the Alamo Drafthouse is having a Selena Movie Party. On Saturday, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., they will screen your fave J.Lo film, even providing props like Selena lyric sheets, though you know you don’t actually need them. Tickets start at $8.00.
El Paso, Texas
This weekend, folk in El Paso, Texas will have three opportunities to enjoy a Selena Movie Party at the Alamo Drafthouse. On Friday, at 7 p.m., Saturday, at 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, at 6:30 p.m., the spot will screen the classic film, even providing props like lyric sheets (not that you need it). Tickets start at $12.99.
On Saturday, Houston Sel fans can attend the second annual Anything for Selenas birthday bash. The event, which kicks off at the House of Blues at 7 p.m., will feature a tribute show of artists singing hits like “Como La Flor,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “I Could Fall In Love” and more. Tickets cost $15.
On Monday, Sel’s actual b-day, the Axelrad Beer Garden will host a free 5 p.m. “Selena” movie night and tribute, packed with Mexican food as the 1997 film screens.
On Wednesday, April 18, the Houston Food Bank will have a Selena Karaoke Night, which will feature singing, trivia and a costume contest. The fun begins at 6 p.m.
That same day, Under the Radar Brewery will host a Selena Trivia and Sing-Along at 7 p.m., and they’re inviting guests to dress in their best Sel gear.
McAllen, get ready! The annual Selena Block Party is back on Sunday. From 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., the bars Suerte, Thirsty Monkey and Tres will have back-to-back festivities, like movie screenings, sing and dance-alongs, a tribute concert, look-alike contests, a silent disco and a whole lot of Selena-inspired drinks.
On Saturday, fans in Nueva York could attend the Selena Por Siempre party at DROM. The event, taking place from 10:30 p.m. to 4 a.m., will include a series of tribute performances, DJ sets and video projections as well as art, Selena tribute nail sessions and costumes, dance and look-alike contests. Tickets start at $10.
NYC, SOB’s on Varick St. will be hosting its first-ever Techno Cumbia Brunch on Sunday. From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., enjoy good food, a dance party, a costume contest and Sel songs all day long. Open to people of all ages, it’s just $10 to get in.
On Saturday, Selenabration will come to Oakland, Calif. The annual event will include live music, DJs and a Selena look-alike contest with a $150 grand prize. DJ Sizzle will spin Selena classics and the Selenamos will make an appearance, with several other acts also expected. The event, starting at 9 p.m., will also take place in San Jose, Calif. on Friday. Purchase tickets, which range between $15-$30, at Sonido Clash.
In Pheonix, Selena fans can celebrate the late megastar at Como La Flor, a tribute night hosted at the Boycott Bar. From your favorite tunes to a gender-inclusive look-alike contest to $4 Como La Flor shots, the turn-up, starting at 9 p.m. and ending at 2 a.m., will definitely be a great time.
On Saturday, the people of Saginaw, Michigan can enjoy a Fiesta de La Flor Selena Paint Party. The festival, which takes place at the U Me Paint Experience, will include music, food and the opportunity to paint your own Selena portrait. Tickets range from $50 to $70.
San Antonio, Texas
In San Antonio, Texas, the city-based movie theater Santikos is screening the “Selena” film at its Casa Blanca, Embassy, Mayan Palace, Northwest, Palladium, Rialto and Silverado locations. The screenings take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday for just $5 a ticket. Another $4.50 could also get you a slice of pizza, so you can eat along with the queen who could gobble down a whole medium pizza by herself.
San Diego, Calif.
On Sunday, The Como La Flor Band, led by our fave Sel-inspired baby girl Nira, will have a Selena Birthday Celebration concert. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at San Diego’s House of Blues, and tickets are just $12.50.
San Jose, Calif.
