Twenty-three years after famed Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla’s death, her reputation as a Latinx icon and legend has continued to only grow. In recent years, her name has been used promote to a major makeup line, her image to sell clothing and now the story of her tragic death to rake in television views. In the latest account about her life, American television channel TNT focuses on the death of the pop reina in a 13-episode mini-series.
“El Secreto de Selena” suggests that there’s more beneath the surface of the publicized murder of the famed singer than her fans might have thought.
The new mini-series is inspired by Emmy Award-winning Journals María Celeste Arrarás’ 1997 book Selena’s Secret: The Revealing Story Behind Her Tragic Death which claimed to have done a deep dive into the moments that occurred before Mexican American singer’s murder through interviews with the singer’s murderer Yolanda Saldivar. After the book’s release, the Quintanilla family slammed the book and its author’s claims saying that it was filled with fiction and lies. Still almost eleven years after the book was first published, TNT has turned the book into a series.
Selena will be portrayed by Mexican actress Maya Zapata.

The series trailer cuts through a series of jarring scenes that first start with title cards that read “They mystery… is over?” It then all cuts to shots of Quintanilla’s murdered body and Saldivar with a voice-over that says “When it seems that a chapter has ended, ironically, it is the beginning of the story.” It also features clips of Mexican actresses Damayanti Quintanar as Saldivar and Sofía Lama as María Celeste Arrarás.
The new series is one out of various projects set to depict the life of the Tejano singer. This past year, ABC greenlit a pilot for a series inspired by Quintanilla with Selena’s siblings, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., and Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga on to produce.
“El Secreto De Selena” premieres on TNT this month on September 23rd at 9pm.
