Gina Rodriguez is a Latina who knows how to put her money where it can be better well spent. This year will be the actress’s second to last shot at earning an Emmy Award nomination for her work on the four season-running CW show “Jane The Virgin.” To secure the honor, most networks and studios would spend a lavish amount on campaign promotions in a run called “For Your Consideration” (or FYC). They’ll put their shows’ names and characters on bus stops and billboard ads in and around New York or Los Angeles and if you’re lujoso enough to be part of a TV Academy member the shows will send you loads of fly branded swag.
This year, instead of taking part in the Emmy Awards’ hot campaign season, the Puerto Rican actress is using her allotted funds to send an undocumented student to college.
Rodriguez’s Emmy campaign funds will be sent to an unnamed Latina high school student who will be off to Princeton University in the fall.
Rodriguez, who won a Golden Globe for “Jane The Virgin” back in 2015 but has never won an Emmy, paired up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles to find a student in need. She eventually came across a Princeton University-bound Latina and will now be able to pursue her education without having to find funding on her own.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Rodriguez expressed her reservations about going public with her decision. “It’s taboo to talk about the money being spent, but it’s the reality,” Rodriguez explained. “I think sharing this might inspire other people to do something similar. You can desire recognition and, at the same time, decide to not play in the confines of the game as it’s set up.”
“Jane The Virgin” will enter it’s fifth and final season this fall and throughout its run has worked to highlight the stories and struggles of the country’s undocumented immigrant population. While Rodriguez’s campaign funding might not be directly benefiting the show this time around, this charitable act undoubtedly works to highlight the show’s merits and values .
Now that’s a Latina who deserves an Emmy!
