Just days after Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, leaving millions without electricity, communication, water or food, New York Boricua rapper Princess Nokia launched a GoFundMe to raise money for islanders in need. Four months later, the Caribbean island is still facing a mounting humanitarian crisis, with organizations on the ground working tirelessly to help its people in ways the federal government has declined to. On Wednesday, the “Tomboy” MC announced that the thousands of dollars amassed through her independent fundraiser will go to supporting many of these hardworking groups on the front lines.
In a post on Instagram, the rising star announced that she raised a total of $15,000 and that she would be donating between $1,000 and $3,000 to seven “community approved non profit organizations that are doing wonderful groundwork for the efforts of disaster relief and the people of Puerto Rico.” The donations will go to Tainas Unidas, the Maria Fund, Resilient Power P.R., Fondoder Resiliencia PR, Finca Concencia de Vieques, UPROSE Brooklyn, and Colectiva Feminista PR.

While the 25-year-old didn’t make her $100,000 goal, every dollar counts in the reconstruction of the island. Princess Nokia also plans on using $1,000 to fund her own volunteer trip to Puerto Rico to help the people firsthand.
Like the young rapper, many celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, Fat Joe, Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, Gina Rodriguez, Enrique Iglesias, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ricky Martin and more, have also made donations to aid in Puerto Rico’s recovery.
