“To be honest, I think Francia should be getting this award because she saved me life.”
Selena Gomez had one of the craziest years of her life this year. The 25-year-old singer shared her very public battle with lupus and her life-saving kidney transplant, which we know was provided to her by her best friend and roommate Francia Raisa. Gomez was honored as the Billboard Woman of the Year at the Billboard Women In Music awards and Raisa was the presenter. Raisa shared a brief and touching narrative about how the two Latina entertainers met and became the best of friends. She explained how they met as young stars while Raisa worked on “The Secret Life of an American Teenager”. Gomez was working on “Wizards of Waverly Place” at the time.
Gomez took the stage after the touching intro and immediately began to cry along with almost every celeb in the audience. The Texas-born pop star spoke about her tumultuous year without pointing out any one moment in particular. She thanked her family, friends, and other women in the music industry for helping elevate her voice. Gomez thanked the women in music specifically for making her feel comfortable as part of the community during the last year.
“I want people to know that I respect the platform that I have so deeply because I knew that I wanted to be a part of something great,” Gomez said through tears. “I want people to feel great because I love people.”

These two Latinas are showing the world and the music industry what it means to be best friends. It is so beautiful to see two women support each other without reservation. ?
