The disarray that continues to lay waste to Venezuela as a result of food and medicine shortages and its ongoing national power outage (now on day five) continues to incite global dismay. Now, after a video of a mother carrying the emaciated body of her deceased daughter went viral on Saturday, users on social media are calling for the end of Maduro’s rule with the hashtag #FueraMaduro.
The disturbing images of a Venezuelan mother carrying the body of her 22lb 19-year old daughter are evidence of the complete chaos currently ravaging the country.
Over the weekend, a journalist captured video of a woman outside the Comprehensive Diagnostic Center (CDI) in the state of Carabobo holding her daughter who had died in her arms moments before. The mother, who has been identified as Elizabeth Díazabraza, reported that she had arrived at the medical center but had been turned away because of the country’s current blackout.
According to La Prensa, the woman told the journalist that “The doctor told me that they have finished their day, since there is no light, so I was going to take her to Las Lomas (another hospital).”
Doctors at CDI reportedly assured Díazabraza that if she went to the medical center in Las Lomas the staff could treat her daughter’s cerebral palsy and malnourishment.
While carrying her daughter on her way to the next medical facility, the daughter’s condition reportedly worsened. According to the mother, her daughter began to convulse and vomit before passing away. “She started belching and belching, and suddenly she stiffened, and I ran back to my house to find my other daughter,” the woman said according to reports.
The horror of Díazabraza’s daughter’s death did not end there.
After carrying her daughter through darkened streets on foot, the mother finally arrived at the medical center in Las Lomas where the facility confirmed her daughter’s death. Then they advised her to walk her daughter to the morgue. The video captured by the journalist shows Díazabraza in a state of shock as she carries her lifeless daughter’s body there.
In response to the images of Díazabraza and her daughter, users online have called for the end of the Maduro administration with the #FueraMaduro hashtag.
Last Thursday, Venezuela’s power system went out, thrusting most of the country, including its capital Caracas, into darkness and additional crisis.
The blackout is the latest emergency to overtake Venezuela which has been in a state of deterioration for years. While hyperinflation and a sinking economy have led over 3 million citizens to leave the country since 2014, attention to the country’s failing structure has renewed the sympathy of those outside of it in recent months. After political leaders refused to acknowledge the re-election of President Nicolás Maduro as legitimate, the country has been in a state of turmoil with episodes of looting, protests and now the loss of power.
Government officials have claimed that the blackout was caused by a fault at Guri hydropower plant, which supplies most of the country’s states with electricity.
According to The New York Times, analysts and electricity-sector contractors have pointed to years of mismanagement and corruption as the culprits in the country’s electrical systems’ breaking points.
Experts have warned that their is no end in sight for the blackouts.
