2. Her years being fly, and how it almost never was.

She was the runner-up but when the person who was chosen to be on the show dropped out, Jennifer stepped in. So remember. Second place doesn’t necessarily mean the rom comfirst loser, as many people like to say. You can come in second and still make it happen.

3. Record-breaking babe.

Jenny from the Block dominated the charts in the late 90’s and 2000’s. So much so that she became the first woman to have a number one album and film in the same week. Her second album “J.Lo” produced the top-ten singles “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” and “I’m Real” arom-com”The Wedding Planner” topped the box office. The film went on to gross nearly $95 million. Her success do cost a thing.

6. Her sister’s got talent too.

@jlo / Instagram

7. Jenny is a jock.

@jlo / Instagram

In high school, J.Lo wasn’t necessarily a star academic student, but she shut it down on the field. She ran track at a national level, played on the softball team, and did gymnastics. Homegirl was killing it, and now we know that she’s always had stamina.

8. Backup dancing diva.

@jlo / Instagram

If you ever got down on New Kids on the Block back in the early ’90s then you probably caught Jennifer in the background doing the running man to “The Right Stuff” and “Hangin’ Tough.” She even performed with them during their performance of their single “Games” at the American Music Awards. You can catch her front and center ripping intothe stage with her moves here.

9. That’s the way, Jenny goes

@jlo / Instagram

J.Lo didn’t just work her legendary dance moves for NKOTB. For years, she also got down with Janet Jackson, an icon herself. If you remember the song “That’s The Way Love Goes,” which is an absolute banger and one of Janet’s greatest hits, you might remember Jennifer appearing in the music video. Like a moth to a flame burned by the fire….

10. She got it from her parents.

@jlo / Instagram

While Jennifer’s parents weren’t in the music or film industry, they encouraged their daughter’s talent by having her and her sister’s perform at home for each other, friends, and family. Their singing and dancing would help keep them out of trouble, so her parents believed. Little did they know they were watering the seed for a blossoming career in entertainment.

11. She broke Britney.

@jlo / Instagram

Jen topped the Billboard Hot 100 with a debut single thanks to her first smash right out the gate, “If You Had My Love.” That song was EVERYWHERE when it came out. Four months prior, Britney Spears had topped the chart with her debut, “…Baby One More Time.” Jennifer also joins other legends like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson in debuting a single at no. 1.

12. Theater nerd.

@jlo / Instagram

Back when she was still an aspiring actress and dancer trying to make her mark, she traveled Europe and Japan as part of the chorus of several different musical productions. All those theater dorks in high school can feel good knowing one of them made it.

13. High school acting.

Her first movie role came after seeing a call for actors for a small independent film called “My Little Girl.” She was still in high school when she auditioned and landed a role in the movie. That experience is what made her decide she wanted to be a “famous movie star.” So we have to thank the makers of that small movie for gifting us J.Lo.

14. College wasn’t for her.

@jlo / Instagram

When Jennifer’s parents learned of their daughter’s dreams to be a big star in Hollywood, they weren’t happy. In fact, they thought it was a bad decision overall and insisted she go to college. Jennifer appeased them and enrolled in college in New York. At least for a little while. She dropped out after one semester, choosing to move to Manhattan to start her career. It created some major drama with her family, but in the end they supported her. And it paid off!

15. On the 6

During those years she commuted from the Bronx into Manhattan for her dance lessons, she had to take the 6 train. Those long train rides into the city to make her dreams come true later would inspire the name of her debut album “On The 6.” It was her way of paying homage to the struggle and hard work she put in to hone her talent and make it.

16. You can thank her for Google images.

@jlo / Instagram

Google decided to create the Google Images search option literally after J.Lo broke the Internet with her iconic green Grammy dress. So many people were searching for articles about the dress and downloading photos of her in it that the brains behind the world’s most popular search engine decided to create a whole new option so people could find photos of Lopez, the dress and anything else their heart fancies.

17. She fought an ex and won.

@jlo / Instagram

Her first husband, Ojani Noa, tried to do J.Lo dirty by shopping around a book on their relationship. It was clearly a cash grab where he’d be working to sully her name in public. But Jennifer wasn’t having it. She sued and not only got the book shut down, had a judge forbid Noa from “”criticizing, denigrating, casting in a negative light or otherwise disparaging” her, and got him to turn in all materials related to the book. Nicely done! Don’t mess with Jenny.

18. A tap for love.

Jennifer’s love life has always been major tabloid fodder. From Noa, to her ex-husband and father to her children Marc Anthony, to her affinity for backup dancers, to Diddy, to the ill-fated other half of Bennifer, K.Lo can’t love and date without the world wanting to get messy. But with former baseball star Alex Rodriguez she seems to have met her match. And apparently ,the coupling happened after Jennifer was eating a Cobb salad and some soup at a restaurant in L.A. and saw Alex walk passed. For whatever reason, she decided to tap him on the shoulder and introduce herself. Then, as they say, the rest is history.

19. First date story.

On their first date, which was a dinner date, Alex pulled a move that could have totally backfired. But it totally worked! He got up to go to the bathroom. While he was there he sent her a text that read “You look sexy AF.” Daaaaaaaaaaaamn. Jennifer thought it was a cute move and since then the couple have shown their love for one another all around. Even though that move worked, Jennifer told Ellen that it didn’t land A.Rod a slumber party. “Mama don’t sleep over on the first date,” she said.

20. Most beautiful.

Jennifer has been named Most Beautiful Woman Alive by People Magazine, Details magazine named Lopez the “Sexiest Woman of the Year” in 1998, and she topped FHM’s “100 Sexiest Women” list twice. Her beauty is well known and appreciated, with Vanity Fair once calling her famous butt a cultural icon. Jennifer insists that becoming a mother and growing older doesn’t mean she can’t be sexy. In fact, she believes a woman can be sexy up until she dies.

Don’t be fooled by the rocks that she’s got. Jennifer Lopez worked hard to make an impact in our culture, and we have her to thank in part for the increased visibility of Latinxs in media. She’s opened doors for others as she’s kicked them down and for that, she is forever a queen.

The Spanish ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ Is Being Shared To Honor Hispanic Workers Fighting COVID-19

The Spanish ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ Is Being Shared To Honor Hispanic Workers Fighting COVID-19

There’s no denying that the world looks a lot different now than it did in 1947. And while the list of all of the positive changes that the decades stretching between now and then have done for the world and minorities, a recent campaign is also highlighting the ways in which our current president could take some notes on certain values the United States held dear during this time. Particularly ones that had been pressed for by one of our former presidents.

As part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Good Neighbor Policy” effort, he worked to promote positive and healthy relations between the United States in Latin American countries.

At the time Rooseveltaimed to ensure that the North, Central and South American countries avoided breaking under the influence of Axis countries during World War II. As part of this campaign, Roosevelt comissioned a Spanish and a Portuguese version of the U.S. national anthem. According to Time Magazine he also “recruited Hollywood to participate in this Good Neighbor Policy; Walt Disney went on goodwill tour of South America, hoping to find a new market for his films, and ended up producing two movies inspired by the trip: Saludos Amigos (1942) and The Three Caballeros (1944). The Brazilian star Carmen Miranda also got a boost, and her role in The Gang’s All Here made her even more famous in the U.S. And alongside these cross-cultural exchanges, the U.S. government decided it needed an anthem that could reach Spanish speakers.”

According to NPR, Clotilde Arias, wrote wrote the translation at the end of World War II, was born in the small Peruvian city, Iquitos in 1901 and moved to New York City to become a composer when she was 22-years-old. Her version of the anthem is now part of an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Now in an effort to support Latino communities affected by the coronavirus, the non-profit We Are All Human Foundation’s Hispanic Star campaign commissioned the a remake of the song.

Hoping to raise awareness of its Hispanic Recovery Plan and efforts to help to connect Hispanic small businesses and workers with resources during the pandemic, the campaign brought the old recording from obscurity.

For the song, the 2019 winner of the singing competition La Voz,  Jeidimar Rijos, performed “El Pendón Estrellado.” Or, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The song has already received quite a bit of comments and support on Youtube.

Hang in there, fam. We can only get through this together.

Thank you for all of your love & support to those who have been readers and customers of @thehoodwitch over the years. ♥️You know truly how hard I work and that this is my livelihood and culture. Visual art and magic ARE my life and practice. Not a peach flavored “turquoise” glitter drink. My magic is in my blood, my magic is in my ability to bring life to my visions, it is creation & destruction. Over the last 6 years, I have been so honored and lucky to be featured in some of the largest media publications internationally not limited to Instagram. This is bigger than that and the creative team for Starbucks knew that. I have personally worked on consulting large companies in their design concepts this work comes naturally to me. “So what’s the big fuss?” My personal style has become synonymous with the visual aesthetic of my brand. No, I absolutely did not “invent” the crystal balls nor acrylic nails but What I created was a space for myself along with other POC to feel represented and have visual imagery that was representative of us. The colorful candles of my local botanicas, my gold jewelry, and my long nails clutching my crystals are certainly not “new” but to see them presented in a manner that I shared visually in this space was. Katherine de Vos Devine @devosdevine is a lawyer and art historian who wrote a powerful and insightful look as to what exactly is happening with this situation and we are sharing it in our story today because more than anything she truly gives the full tea of the situation. I can strip away the crystal balls, the nail art, and delete all of my beautifully curated photos but I will always be me, I will always be my grandmother’s voices and wisdom. I will create, and I will always know my value and my worth. I trust and believe that my ancestors and my guides are looking after me. These giants may have the money to bully artists, creatives, and small business but we know the truth and absolutely must not allow it. As a small business owner, I appreciate you standing with us in this uphill journey and even if it goes nowhere, at the end of the day I can laugh to myself knowing that Starbucks made a drink inspired by HW 🔮
