21 Día de Los Muertos Makeup Looks You Won’t Believe
Dia de Los Muertos is just around the corner and it’s an important cultural celebration in many Latin American and Caribbean countries that honors the dead and our connections to our past. Unfortunately, this very special day has also been culturally appropriated by non-Latinx people. It’s hard to go online around Halloween without seeing a makeup tutorial by a (hopefully) well-meaning non-Latina who, um, doesn’t really know what she’s talking about.
In order to avoid this, we’ve gathered up the 21 best Dia de Los Muertos makeup looks from Latinas. They’re so gorgeous that you honestly won’t believe. From a lighter look to one that’s full of color to the darker side of things, there are plenty of looks to choose from if you’re looking for some inspiration for this year’s Day of the Dead look.
1. A lighter look by @sincerelyjulessincerelyjules/Instagram
Adding a lighter touch to your Dia de Los Muertos look is definitely a good idea, and this one is a beauty. Just look at those pretty pearls and cream flowers! An inspiration, indeed.
2. Red flower drama by @lilylove213lilylove213/Instagram
Red is a powerful color and has always been my favorite when it comes to any kind of makeup, but especially when it comes to anything Dia de Los Muertos related. This look is particularly gorgeous with those huge flowers all around… along with the big jewels. I mean, COME ON!
3. Mariachi inspiration by @carlalaraphotographycarlalaraphotography/Instagram
This look is pretty badass and definitely one that you may want to duplicate. I particularly love that the makeup artist matched her model’s hair with some of the colors on the face. That’s a pretty genius way of making everything look cohesive.
4. Total #relationshipgoals by @tat31tat31/Instagram
If you want to watch with your sweetie, then this look is THE one to duplicate. She’s looking like the perfect Dia de Los Muertos bride and he’s looking like a bonafide fine groom. That’s definitely the way I like it.
5. The indisputable queen by @jayylivefastdieprettyjayylivefastdiepretty/Instagram
Oh my gosh, just LOOK at that huge crown! It’s absolutely beautiful and definitely one that you’ll be impressed by. It might take forever to actually try to make it, but at least you’ll be plenty inspired.
6. Simplicity & amor by @makeup_by_nancy15makeup_by_nancy15/Instagram
Another look for the couple that likes to costume together, this Dia de Los Muertos look is pretty simple but still gorgeous. All you need is some masterful white and black, and you’ve got yourself an amazing look.
7. Bright color lovers by @elviamakeupelviamakeup/Instagram
If you’ve got brightly-colored hair (or want some), then this is the look for you. I’m particularly in love with the pink-and-blue combo around the eyes, but the little piece of bejeweled emerald on the nose (that matches the hair) is pretty amazing, too.
8. Blue-green magic by @supernova_muasupernova_mua/Instagram
Part of what makes this outfit so amazing is the blue and green flowers that accent the makeup decorations on the chest. In order to differentiate things a bit, the actual makeup contrasts with red and yellow colors.
9. Gorgeously dark death by @beautybyshaqbeautybyshaq/Instagram
Holy wow! If you’re looking for an incredibly dark and sinister look for Dia de Los Muertos, then look no further. This purple-and-white inspired look is dark and powerful. In fact, it makes you look like a bonafide bruja.
10. A lovely half-face by @vanessahairandmakeupvanessahairandmakeup/Instagram
Want something simple but still powerful for the day? Then you might try creating a half-face look for Dia de Los Muertos. This tutorial is pretty easy but definitely something that you can accomplish while still looking fly.
11. Bitten by butterflies by @bettypaz_bettypaz_/Instagram
If you want something that’s a beautiful combination of Dia de Los Muertos along with your flowery personality, then this is the look you should go for. Butterflies and brightly colored flowers really make me think of spring even though, well, it’s technically autumn.
12. A very blue existence by @galletitagusgalletitagus/Instagram
This lady looks pretty darn incredible in her all white and blue makeup look. I especially love the glitter all around as well as the bright red flower that accents her hair. This look is particularly complimented by the blue contacts and the white wig.
13. A very easy look by @divinebeauty_agdivinebeauty_ag/Instagram
If you want something totally subtle, then this look is the one you should try. It allows you to experiment with your Dia de Los Muertos makeup but without making it ALL about that. It’s pretty flawless.
14. A little dose of color by @lilysartelilysarte/Instagram
Just a little bit of color is all you need in order to rock a slightly more unique Dia de Los Muertos look. I really love how there’s a little bit of pink, a little bit of yellow, and just a little bit of purple here.
15. Dark colors by @crimsonroseinbloomcrimsonroseinbloom/Instagram
The bright green contacts really stand out in the middle of this look that is accentuated with dark fall colors. The autumn oranges and browns really give a lot of drama to this Dia de Los Muertos face.
16. Bright colors and loving it by @muaashleyriveramuaashleyrivera/Instagram
Can we all say WOW? The flower crown that accents this Dia de Los Muertos look is pretty fabulous. The bright yellows and orange really add a little something special to the dark orange and reds of the eyes.
17. Everyone loves sunflowers by @mellowpalomamellowpaloma/Instagram
This is definitely one Dia de Los Muertos look that you can wear any time of year, I think. It might not be totally appropriate but the sunflowers seen in this makeup look area really lovely way to add some brightness to the entire face.
18. The beauty of sunset by @greenyartedecorazongreenyartedecorazon/Instagram
If you really want to commit to an absolutely breathtaking Dia de Los Muertos look, then you absolutely have to look at this one. It’ll take some time to put together but then you will absolutely be THE queen of the party.
19. Subtle and amazing by @funmakeup505funmakeup505/Instagram
You don’t have to go with a full Dia de Los Muertos look in order to capture the essential beauty of this holiday. This makeup application primarily uses black and little accents of white in order to make it work. You can still see most of the skintone, which gives it a really unique quality.
20. All about the roses by @msirinagonzalezmsirinagonzalez/Instagram
Didn’t I mention that roses were my favorite? This is a look that I had a few years ago and it remains my absolute favorite. I especially loved my eyelashes here, which had subtle little white raindrops and added a little something special to the look. Oh, and that rose on my neck…
21. A classic look by @fergiefergie/Instagram
Back in 2013, Fergie nearly broke the internet with her phenomenal Dia de Los Muertos look. Although hubby Josh Duhamel also had one to match, it’s hers that is truly special. And, I mean, if any celeb can rock this one, it’s definitely her!
