9 Halloween Costumes That’ll Give You A Chance To Bust Out Your 00s Wardrobe

One of the inadvertently awesome things about the success of Latinas in the entertainment industry is how their iconography allows so much creative opportunity. This is particularly true when it comes to style and costumes. From recreating one of Selena Quintanilla’s most iconic looks to going bringing back a classic but retro Latina look, there are quite a few looks to copy/ paste this year for Halloween when the theme of the 90s and early aughts are gonna be strong.

Whether you want to look like Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera or Shakira, we have the guide that you must try. These 10 Halloween costumes inspired by your favorite 2000s princesas del pop are going to absolutely be the talk of the party.

The best part is that you probably have most of the things you need already in your closet or makeup drawer so, for the rest of the look, go shopping — and get ready to wow!

1. Adrienne Bailon in 3LW’s “Playas Gonna Play” (2000)

You might not totally remember 3LW’s reign as a girl group, but they were fantastic — especially in their music video for “Playas Gonna Play.” This Halloween, you can get your best girlfriends together to dress up like the group or simply go as Adrienne Bailon herself. The main thing you’ll need is a red skirt and a red and white top, just like she has. However, the key here is to let your curls hang wild, just like her. Oh, and definitely go light on the makeup since she’s going for a really subtle look in this video.

2. Shakira in “Whenever, Wherever” (2001)

Shakira’s iconic look in this music video, the one that set her on a back to superstardom in the U.S. and around the world (even though she was already pretty darn famous), is one that you must try this Halloween. Hunt vintage stores and cowboy shops for just the right look: This touseled skirt, big belt, and a crop top that leaves very little to the imagination. Make sure you also duplicate her rosy cheeks and pink lips — and then spend the rest of your pre-Halloween prep on practicing those hip moves.

3. Las Ketchup in “Asereje” (2002)

Las Ketchup/YouTube

The ladies of Las Ketchup are another great girl group for you to copy this Halloween season. All you need is your two best girlfriends and don’t forget to break out the LBDs and hoops. Whether you wear an off-the-shoulder number or a spaghetti strap, it doesn’t matter. Put your hair up or wear it down, that’s okay too. Just don’t forget to practice those badass arm moves to fully get into the “Asereje” of it all.

4. Fergie in The Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is The Love?” (2003)

The Black Eyed Peas/YouTube

Before she hit it big as a solo artist and married the ever-adorable Josh Duhamel, Fergie was the female lead of The Black Eyed Peas. Although they had many songs, “Where is the Love?” is one of their best and you can easily duplicate this look for Halloween. Bring out your smoky eye and pink glossy lip for this one, and then adorn yourself with your favorite hoops. Finally, make sure you’re wearing your favorite jeans and a white tank top to duplicate Fergie. Finally, put on plenty of ring bling and you’re good to go.

5. Christina Milian in “Dip It Low” (2004)

Christina Milian/YouTube

There’s a few amazing looks in Christina Milian’s “Dip It Low” music video, but this one is by far my favorite. You might need to venture into your nearest Chinatown or look online for a blue kimono-style robe. Then style your curls all the way down your back and, most importantly, make sure that you have those high heels set. They’re hot pink to match the color of the robe’s sash, but you can try whatever else you have in the closet.

6. Jennifer Lopez in “Get Right” (2005)

I mean, is there anything more iconic than the dancing JLo accomplishes in “Get Right”? Although she’s still dancing up a storm over a decade later, that Jenny from the Block swagger is in full swing in this music video. You can totally duplicate her look, whether you’re going for the fuzzy coat she wears earlier on or this awesome outfit. It might take you a while to find all the elements but if you’re struggling to find something in your closet, consider a quick search at your local thrift shop (or, Amazon) for shiny pants (Amazon, anyone?). From your closet, wear your favorite high-heeled boots, a tan shirt that you can cut into a crop top and a simple white hat. If you can get your hands on a cane, well, consider your outfit complete.

7. Christina Aguilera in “Ain’t No Other Man” (2006)

Christina Aguilera/YouTube

You might want to dress up like Xtina in one of her earlier videos, like “Genie in a Bottle” or “Dirrrty”, but I highly recommend that you instead go for her sexy look in “Ain’t No Other Man.” Here’s what you need: A sparkly silver dress that hugs all of your curves. Accessorize with sparkly jewelry, like a huge fake diamond ring and a big bracelet (just as Xtina wears). Finally, you’ll want to find an old-school microphone to carry around with you so that you can belt out this tune. Oh wait, and did I forget to mention: You’ll want your best smoky eye look coupled with a bright red lipstick to finish off this outfit.

8. Kat DeLuna in “Whine Up” (2007)

Kat DeLuna/YouTube

Remember Kat DeLuna? Her music video for “Whine Up” had me dancing all summer long and I still can’t help but shake my hips whenever I hear this song. If you want to dress up like her in this video (and why wouldn’t you?), then you’ll need quite a few things: For one, you want a frosty white lip gloss for your lips and to create a very cool cat eye. Then you’ll need your best hoop earrings and to put your hair up in a ponytail… But, of course, the signature piece here is that green hoodie. You’ll have to scour the internet to find something similar, but don’t be afraid to cut and trim what you need to in order to make it look just right.

9. Mariah Carey in “Touch My Body” (2008)

Mariah Carey/YouTube

Mariah has a lot of iconic looks but this one in “Touch My Body” is one of her favorites. The best way to do this outfit is to convince your unsuspecting sweetie to do a couples costume and have him dress up like the Mariah-loving nerd in the video. He may not love this idea but YOU will look absolutely amazing if you copy this outfit just so. Nail the look with  a white button-down shirt to tie up into a crop top and get your hands on a navy colored (preferablly plaid) mini. Most of all, though, you need to get that “M” necklace in order to show off to the rest of the world just who you are exactly. That’s right, Mariah, rock it.

Cardi B Ran Into A Fan Wearing Her ‘Invasion of Privacy’ Outfit And Their Encounter Was The Sweetest

Cardi B Ran Into A Fan Wearing Her ‘Invasion of Privacy’ Outfit And Their Encounter Was The Sweetest

When you’re a celebrity with the record deals, big movie awards and legions of fans, it’s hard to imagine you’d want to be anyone else but who you are. Still, each year as ghosts creep out and zombies crawl up from their graves, celebrities prove that there’s still a novelty to dressing up like someone, something else, for the Halloween season. This year, with so many celebrities already out and attending some of the most spooktacular events of the year, we’ve already seen tons of inspiring costumes from our favorites and also those inspired by our favorite.

Here’s a look at what la reinas of entertainment are up to this Halloween.

Cardi B is out and about finding her dopplegangers.

During a trip home from the recording studio, Queen Belcalis caught up with a fan on the street who was wearing the rapper’s outfit from the cover of her Invasion of Privacy album. “I have to tell you I love your costume,” Cardi said speaking to the fan as she stopped next to her in her car on the street. We can only imagine just how shocked her gushing fan was as she drove away.

Heartbreaker Mariah Carey looked like she was checking up on one of the hearts she broke.

Mariah Carey and her man Bryan Tanaka dressed up as the ultimate couple that belongs together this year. Dressed as a sexy nurse to his hunky doctor, Carey looked stunning enough to stop a heart.

Christina Milian did a throw back as a Hello Kitty.

La princessa de Halloween went Hello Kitty crazy with an outfit that certainly takes the pumpkin cake. She even went for icy blue eyes this year to top it all off.

Victoria Justice went as the oujia board your ma told you not to play with.

The bold costume was also a pretty bold move for the former Disney Channel star of Puerto Rican descent. To really round out her stunning makeup art, Justice also went for a spooky set of eyes.

Joey Fatone and Izabel Araujo

The former NSYNC member and his Brazilian BFF Izabel Araujo went as the twins from “The Shining” to the Casamigos Halloween party in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Lauren Jauregui went OTT with Halloween news.

The former Fifth Harmony singer not only dressed up as Harley Quinn for fright night, she also announced the release of her new song “Expectations.” According to her it’s worth a listen for anyone eager to jump on those Halloween vibes.

Sofia Vergara got us thirsty for some TV and diamonds.

In a promo post about the upcoming episode of her hit ABC show “Modern Family” the Colombian actress dropped an image of her beloved character Sofia dressed as Marilyn Monroe. No doubt, anyone looking for a last minute Halloween costume already in possession of a Blonde wig can go as cross version of Sofia x Marilyn.

The Legendary Guatemalan Tale Of El Sombrerón Will Literally Spook You

The Legendary Guatemalan Tale Of El Sombrerón Will Literally Spook You

Remember that guy who wouldn’t leave you alone? Maybe he sent you cute texts that you didn’t find so cute or kept trying to convince you to give him a chance when you knew that wasn’t going to happen. Well. We have a story for you about a guy named El Sombrerón, the original Dude Who Refused To Get a Clue

The Legend of El Sombrerón

El Sombrerón is a character from Guatemalan legend who simply won’t let his lady loves turn him away, thanks to his magical silver guitar. He’s also called Tzipitio, Tzizimite, or just “the goblin,” and Mexico and Colombia also have versions of this legend. There’s even a 1950 movie that tells the story.

He has a distinctive outfit.

So, who exactly is this creeper? El Sombrerón is a short, old-looking man dressed all in black, with a thick, shiny belt, boots that make noise when he walks, and of course, a big ol’ hat.

He loves his guitar….

His guitar is central to his awful plots. When he plays, his victims – always women with long hair and big eyes – fall under his spell.

…and his pets.

He always brings a few things with him: two enormous black dogs, a pack of mules, a cold breeze, and of course, the silver guitar. You know he’s out causing trouble when you see the mules tied up at some poor, unsuspecting chula’s home.

He’ll take that hair, thank you very much.

Here’s the other thing about El Sombrerón: He’s got this weird thing for braids. Horses, dogs, people – it doesn’t matter. If it’s got long, luscious hair, he wants his hands on it. Which brings us to our dear Susana.

The Story of Susana

Credit: @tawo_0 / Instagram

Many years ago, there lived a Guatemalan woman named Susana. She had big, beautiful eyes and long hair. She lived a perfectly normal and happy life, but she was exactly El Sombrerón’s type.

Susana never saw him coming.

Susana was sitting on her balcony one night, enjoying the sight of the full moon, when she heard a strange sound and felt a cold breeze overtake her. Little did she know, El Sombrerón tends to show up under just such a moon.

El Sombrerón was up to his usual tricks.

So he appeared under the balcony, and he serenaded her with his guitar and gave her dirt to eat. Now, she was totally under his power, though no one knew it yet.

Susana’s parents were too late.

Susana’s parents couldn’t hear the music, because only El Sombrerón’s victims hear his song, but it was late at night, and their daughter should have been inside anyways. So they brought her inside and locked up the house. Despite their parental concern, the damage had already been done.

El Sombrerón had Susana right where he wanted her.

El Sombrerón kept appearing to play music for Susana, ensuring that she would never sleep again. Whenever she tried to eat anything, it became covered in dirt, and so she couldn’t eat either. All that delicious food…gone to waste, just like her.

The song’s effects began to take hold.

Susana was wasting away, which was exactly what El Sombrerón had planned. When she finally died from the lack of sleep and food, he would steal her soul on its way to Heaven and keep her all to himself forever. He just had to wait.

The situation got worse and worse.

For days, no one knew what to do. El Sombrerón kept showing up to sing, and her food would never be edible, no matter what anyone did. Time was running out, and Susana was fighting for her life.

But Susana’s parents had one last idea.

Lucky for Susana, her parents weren’t bobos, and they decided to try and save their daughter from the mysterious thing that had taken hold of her. Somehow, they knew that her hair was the key.

Goodbye, luscious locks!

Susana’s parents cut off her long hair and took it to the local church, where a priest blessed it with holy water and said some prayers over it. Maybe, they thought, this would finally break El Sombrerón’s curse.

New ‘do, new you, Susana.

Just like that, Susana and her new hairdo were left completely alone. El Sombrerón vanished and never came back, and Susana regained her strength to live a happy life. But El Sombrerón is still out there, looking for his next long-haired lady to serenade.

What have we learned today, class?

Listen to your parents, stay inside, and don’t talk to strange men. The story meant to promote modesty in young women, though if you ask me, it’s not poor Susana’s fault she’s so pretty.

Outdated? Not so fast…

Credit: @duncandzynes / Instagram

Are there any lessons for the modern woman in here? Maybe. You don’t have to chop off your hair to thwart would-be suitors like Susana did – thankfully, there are other ways to handle unwanted attention that will probably be more effective.

…maybe there’s a better moral to this story.

Credit: @changesbybett / Instagram

So, the real moral of the story: Creeps are out there, but there’s always help. Rock your long locks, live your life, and if you feel able to reach out for help, never be afraid to loop in a trusted comadre to help you handle things. And always check in on how your friends are doing — you never know who might need a metaphorical haircut.
