Kehlani’s Tía Questions Why She Turned Out Gay In The ‘What I Need’ Video And Latinx Twitter Is Out Here Praising
Many Latinxs who grew up identifying with the LGBTQ community know how difficult it is not only to come out to your immediate family, but to also earn their acceptance. Our sexuality is not something we are comfortable addressing with our family especially when we identify as bi or gay. For many of us, our family may be in denial, others may hear that it’s only a phase or that we are just rebelling. Nonetheless, it is rare that we see queer Latinx representation in mass media.
Enter Kehlani.
The queen of R&B made a major statement in Hayley Kiyoko’s music video for “What I need”. As seen in the opening of the music video, she fights with her tía about her relationship with another woman. Her tía yells at her that all she cares about is herself before kicking her out of their home.
This representation is a narrative that is much needed in mainstream media and Twitter is here for it.
Yep, Twitter is here celebrating the visibility she’s giving us.
People are thanking the R&B singer for representing in such a beautiful way.
The singer even chimed in to explain the exchange she has with her tía.
And yes, we love how she yelled back in English as many of us have done.
She also teased with a ton of questions.
