Yesterday marked the first day of the 116th Congress, but it wasn’t a typical day on Capitol Hill. While there’s a record-breaking number of women taking the oath for the very first time as House members, there’s also more diversity representing American citizens than ever before. So it’s only natural that these newbies — rebels in their own right — would not adhere to the basic dress code that is typically seen from women working in Washington.
The first session of Congress had a lot of color and a lot of style. Each newly sworn in Congresswomen had their own distinctive look that actually had a symbolic meaning behind it. From Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar who is the first woman to ever wear a hijab in congress to Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Muslim-American, who wore a Palestinian robe — each woman chose their outfit for a reason, including New York’s own Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore a white pantsuit, red lipstick, and hoop earrings.
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that she wore “all-white today to honor the women who paved the path before me, and for all the women yet to come. From suffragettes to Shirley Chisholm, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the mothers of the movement.”
Others including Omar wore white to honor the suffragette movement. Amanda Litman tweeted a further explanation. “Early suffragists wore all white. Shirley Chisholm wore all white to be sworn in. Geraldine Ferraro wore all white when she accepted the VP nomination. Hillary Clinton wore all white to accept the Democratic nomination in 2016. And today, @AOC is wearing all white. History!!”
Women on social media loved that Ocasio-Cortez was representing her Latin roots by wearing hooping earrings and red lipstick.
She looked so stylish too!
It was definitely an emotional moment to see a woman just like us representing the country.
Very cool and so historic.
Now if she could only disclose where she got those hoops.
We need to get our hands on those asap!
A bold statement indeed!
No need to justify your reaction because we’re all feeling the same thing!
